Mint Julep (Georgia style)

Mint Julep (Georgia style)

Mint Julep (Georgia style)

September 15, 2016 – The Republic Steakhouse

Mint Julep (Georgia style)

Mint leaves and sprigs
2 sugar cubes
1/4 oz. peach brandy
1 1/2 oz. brandy

Crush mint leaves and sugar cubes in a large highball glass with a pestle. Fill with crushed ice, pour in the liquors, stir well, and garnish with mint sprig.

Christian Brothers brandy, De Kuyper apricot-flavored brandy. I’ve always loved juleps, and this one was no exception. I really like the fruity/sweet addition of the apricot brandy (we used the apricot because it was the closest we had). The regular brandy is warm and rounded without the bite of the usual Bourbon used in the standard Mint Julep.

Brandy is the original liquor used in juleps. The switch to Bourbon was made when relations with France, brandy’s source at the time, fell apart and made obtaining brandy problematic.

Caledonia

3/4 oz. milk
3/4 oz. cream
1 egg yolk
3/4 oz. crème de cacao (brown)
3/4 oz. brandy

Shake well with ice in a shaker. Strain into a cocktail glass.

Christian Brothers brandy, Tempus Fugit crème de cacao. There’s not much to say about this one that hasn’t already been said about the previous Alexander-type drinks. This version is tad richer from the egg yolk.

Brandy Eggnog

1/4 oz. sugar syrup
1 1/2 oz. brandy
1/4 oz. tawny port
3 1/2 oz. milk
3/4 oz. cream
Nutmeg

Shake well with ice in a shaker. Strain into a large highball glass with ice. Sprinkle with nutmeg.

Christian Brothers brandy. This is exactly as I expected, a light eggnog that’s not overly sweet, overly thick, or overly boozy. Very tasty.

Iced Tea

Iced Tea

July 28, 2016 – The Republic Steakhouse

Iced Tea (Charles Schumann, 1990)

Juice of half a lime
1/4 oz. orange juice
3/4 oz. triple sec
3/4 oz. brandy
3/4 oz. dark rum
3/4 to 1 1/4 oz. cola
1 c. cold tea

Stir well with crushed ice in a large highball glass and add squeezed lime half.

Christian Brothers brandy, Meyers dark rum, Cointreau. Suprisingly, not bad. The drink seems a bit watered down, but that may have been because we fumbled around trying to find the right glass. The orange juice is pretty prominent, which is nice, and the drink is not as boozy as one might think.

Andalusia

1 oz. dry sherry
3/4 oz. Spanish brandy
1/4 oz. white rum
Lemon twist

Stir with ice in a mixing glass. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with the twist.

Christian Brothers brandy, Tio Pepe dry sherry, Flor de Caña silver rum. This is a rather light cocktail. The sherry really comes through while the brandy offers some warmth. I’m not sure what the rum is doing, but whatever it is, it’s good.
