Dubonnet Cassis

1 3/4 oz. Dubonnet
1/4 oz.
Soda
Lemon peel

Stir Dubonnet and cassis over ice in an aperitif glass. Fill with soda, twist lemon peel over drink, and drop into the glass.

Edmund Briottet crème de cassis. This cocktail made think of a very light red wine. It’s not boozy at all. I think I might would prefer it up in stead of on the rocks.

Dash of lemon juice
3/4 oz. Dubonnet
1 oz. brandy
Lemon peel
Orange peel

Stir with ice in a small highball glass. Twist lemon and orange peels over drink and drop into glass.

Christian Brothers brandy. I was kind of excited about this one, you know my love for Dubonnet, but unfortunately this drink didn’t deliver. It was a little flat, although the bitterness was pleasant, it wasn’t too sweet, and had a little bit of a kick from the brandy. A little more body would have been welcome.

3/4 oz. Dubonnet
3/4 oz. gin
Dash of maraschino liqueur
Lemon peel

Stir well with ice in small highball glass. Twist lemon peel over drink and drop in.

Jensen Old Tom gin. This one’s kind of odd. The Dubonnet comes through with it’s light, raisiny port vibe as a richness that I initially parsed as chocolate, but later sips weren’t the same. Ben said it reminded him of raisin bran cereal, which I can understand. This cocktail has a bitterness apart from the gin’s usual bite that just didn’t go away. I have to say, this is the first cocktail with Dubonnet that I didn’t really care for.

Merry Widow No. 2

3/4 oz. dry vermouth
3/4 oz. Dubonnet
3/4 oz. vodka
Dash orange bitters
Lemon peel

Stir well with ice in a mixing glass. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Twist lemon peel over glass and drop into drink.

Dolin dry vermouth, Enchanted Rock vodka. Tasty! Dubonnet wins again! This is a VERY different drink that the No. 1 version, with the light, fruity Dubonnet balanced perfectly against the slightly bitter, herbal vermouth. The vodka is there just for kick, as vodka does.

Dubonnet Fizz

3/4 oz. lemon juice
1 barspoon powdered sugar
1 1/2 oz. orange juice
1 3/4 oz. Dubonnet
Soda
Stemmed cherry

Shake first four ingredients well with ice in a shaker. Strain into a collins glass over ice and fill with soda. Garnish with the cherry.

Oooh… very tasty! This concoction reminds me of a very light sangria; fruity, but not overly sweet. It’s a good thing these are on the light side, booze-wise, because they go down WAY too easily.

1 oz. Dubonnet
1 oz. Calvados

Stir with ice in an old-fashioned glass.

Wow! I am very impressed. This little cocktail has a wonderful sweet/bitter balance with a deep dried fruityness that is very much like a good port. I can definitely add this to the very short list of good Calvados drinks.
