The Bad Hombre

The Bad Hombre

The Bad Hombre

November 10, 2016 – The Republic Steakhouse

As explained in the previous post, this Tuesday was Election Day. To salve our bruised emotions, Ben and Ryan created drinks inspired by the candidates. See The Nasty Woman for the other side of the aisle.

The Bad Hombre

1 1/2 oz. Casa Noble Reposado tequila
3/4 oz. Punt e Mes
3/4 oz. Licor 43 Cuarenta Y Tres liqueur
3/4 oz. mezcal

Another stunner. Smoky, sweet, a little chocolaty (although there’s nothing specifically chocolate here), and lots of tequila funk. This would make an excellent after-dinner drink.

Bloody Maria

Bloody Maria

September 22, 2016 – The Republic Steakhouse

Bloody Maria

1/4 oz. lemon juice
Worcestershire sauce
Celery salt
Ground black pepper
Tobasco
1 1/2 oz. tequila
4 oz. tomato juice
Celery stalk

Stir well with ice in a collins glass (can also be prepared in a shaker). Garnish with celery stalk.

El Jimador Plata tequila. This drink could also be called a Tequila Maria and is basically a Bloody Mary made with tequila. The Republic insists on tomato juice squeezed to order, the drink had a bright freshness you just can’t get from prepared tomato juice. The tequila is a nice change from bland ol’ vodka and adds a bit of funkiness.

Tequila Gimlet

Tequila Gimlet

Tequila Gimlet

August 4, 2016 – The Republic Steakhouse

Tequila Gimlet

1 ox. lemon juice
1/4 oz. Rose’s lime juice
2 oz. white tequila

Shake in a shaker with ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

El Jimador Plata tequila. A sibling to the original Gimlet and the Vodka Gimlet, but somehow not as appetizing. There is very little sweetness to this, and the tequila’s funk is very prominent. I’m not a big fan.

El Diablo

El Diablo

July 21, 2016 – The Republic Steakhouse

El Diablo

2 oz. tequila
1/4 to 3/4 oz. crème de cassis
Ginger ale
Lime wedge

Stir tequila and cassis with ice in a collins glass. Fill with ginger ale, squeeze lime wedge over glass, and drop in.

Tonaco silver tequila. What a lovely drink! It’s a nice change to have something a bit fruity without relying on citrus. The spice from the ginger really goes well with the tart lime and slightly funky tequila.

Tequila Sour

Tequila Sour

July 7, 2016 – The Republic Steakhouse

Tequila Sour

3/4 oz. lemon juice
1/4 to 3/4 oz. simple syrup
1 1/2 oz. tequila
Stemmed cherry

Shake with ice in a shaker. Strain into a sour glass and garnish with the cherry.

Hussong’s tequila. This could be considered a Margarita with lemon juice instead of lime juice. As such, it is a very tasty drink. Tart, citrusy, and just a little bit funky.

Tequila Sunrise

Tequila Sunrise

April 21, 2016 – The Republic Steakhouse

Tequila Sunrise

Lime wedge
Dashes of grenadine
2 oz. tequila
3 1/2 oz. orange juice

Squeeze lime wedge into a large highball glass half-filled with ice and drop into the glass. Add tequila and dashes of grenadine. Slowly fill with orange juice.

Jimador Blanco tequila, house-made grenadine. Oddly enough, I’ve never had one of these old-time classic cocktails. Boy, was I missing out. If Mexico had a taste, this might just be it. This has a firm tequila flavor without being too funky. A bit on the sweet side and with a gorgeous color gradation… hence the name. You could think of this as a less aggressive margarita.

Mexicana

April 14, 2016 – The Republic Steakhouse

Mexicana

1/4 oz. lemon juice
Dash of grenadine
1 1/2 oz. pineapple juice
1 1/2 oz. tequila

Shake well with crushed ice in a shaker. Strain into a small highball glass half-filled with crushed ice.

Heradura Silver tequila. A very interesting cocktail. I’m still loving just about anything with pineapple juice. The tequila, as it does, brings a funkiness to a lovely sweet/tart balance. It’s not exactly beachy, but it’s close.
