Golden Nail

Golden Nail

Golden Nail

1 1/2 oz. Bourbon
3/4 oz. Southern Comfort

Stir with ice in a small highball glass.

Bulleit Bourbon. This cocktail is basically a Rusty Nail for Bourbon. Rather strong, with the Southern Comfort rounding off some of the Bourbon’s rougher edges. I expected this to be sweeter, but it’s not sweet at all, other than the Bourbon’s natural sweetness.

Rum Julep

Mint leaves and sprigs
2 sugar cubes
1 1/2 oz. white or dark rum

Crush mint leaves and sugar cubes with a pestle in a large highball glass. Fill with crushed ice and pour in rum. Stir well and garnish with a mint sprig.

Kraken Black Spiced rum. Coconutty, tropical, and quite tasty. Brandon did a great job on the crushed ice.

Deep South

Deep South

Deep South

Deep South (Charles Schumann, 1986)

1/4 oz. lemon juice
1/4 oz. Rose’s lime juice
1/4 oz. dark rum
1/4 oz. Southern Comfort
Champagne

Shake first four ingredients with ice in a shaker. Strain into a Champagne flute and fill with Champange.

Gruet sparkling white wine. I had to “sneak” the Southern Comfort in with me for this one (and other SoCo drinks) because The Republic doesn’t stock it. I can see why. This cocktail is best described as… *shrug* meh. The Southern Comfort cuts the mustiness of the wine a bit, but other than that, there’s not much to distinguish its contribution.

Rum Alexander

1 oz. cream
3/4 oz. crème de cacao (brown)
1 1/2 oz. white rum
Nutmeg

Shake well with ice in a shaker. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and sprinkle with nutmeg.

Flor de Caña white rum, Tempus Fugit crème de cacao. An Alexander very much like all the other Alexanders (see Brandy Alexander, Alexander No. 1 and No. 2., Russian Bear, Polar Bear, Russian CadillacAlexander’s Sister); however; something about the rum is very appealing. I might like this one better than all the others.

Vodka Gimlet (Schumann’s)

1 oz. lemon juice
1 oz. Rose’s lime juice
2 oz. vodka

Shake well with ice in a shaker. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Dripping Springs vodka. Apparently, it’s a “Schumann” if you include lemon juice (compare to the plain ol’ Vodka Gimlet). This is a nice Gimlet. Well balanced and not too powerful.

Captain Collins

3/4 to 1 oz. lemon juice
1/4 to 3/4 oz. sugar syrup
2 oz.Canadian whisky
Soda
Stemmed cherry
Lemon slice

Stir first three ingredients well with ice in a collins glass. Fill with soda and garnish with the cherry and lemon slice.

40 Creek Canadian whisky. This is nice, but not exciting. Blame the Canadians. Generic whisky flavor without much bite. I like the other members of the Collins clan much better (see Sandy, Colonel, Mike, Pierre, and Pisco).

Happy New Year!

Bloody Bull

1/4 oz. lemon juice
Celery salt
Ground black pepper
Tabasco
Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 oz. vodka
2 oz. tomato juice
2 oz. beef bouillon
Celery stalk

Stir well with ice in a collins glass (can also be prepared in a shaker). Garnish with celery stalk.

Enchanted Rock vodka. I really like Bloody Marys, and this is a good version of one. The only real departure is the addition of the beef bouillon, which gives the drink an extra depth of savory flavor.
